FedEx Ground receives wireless industry award for new system that captures digital signatures at package delivery FedEx Ground, received a ``Moby'' award at the information technology industry's premier wireless conference, Go Mobile, sponsored by Mobile Insights and held recently in Phoenix. (12/10/2001)The award recognizes FedEx
Ground's recent enhancement of its pickup and delivery data collection and
transmission system to enable the capture of an electronic signature at
package delivery.
The technology upgrade provides FedEx Ground customers with the
signature proof of delivery (P.O.D.) and adds to the detailed package
tracking information in the ground shipping market.
``We are constantly striving to provide our customers with more
information about their shipments faster,'' said Daniel J. Sullivan,
president and chief executive officer of FedEx Ground. ``It is especially
gratifying to know that the leaders in the wireless industry have taken
notice of our new systems and are as impressed with them as our
customers.''
This no-charge, same-day signature proof-of-delivery is made possible
by electronically collecting recipient signatures at the point of delivery
via a portable scanner equipped with a 1/8-inch VGA display and digitizer
overlay. Through the use of on-van computers and a wide area network,
critical data - such as delivery time and recipient name - is posted to
FedEx's award-winning Web site, fedex.com, within an hour of delivery. The
actual signature file is later transmitted via a company-owned local area
network and posted to fedex.com by midnight local time.
